The Black Death (Great Historic Disasters)
Louise Chipley Slavicek
In 1347, Europe suffered the worst natural disaster in human history: the Black Death. Plague devastated the continent for several years before retreating in 1352. Most historians believe that the pandemic, which also swept through parts of West Asia and North Africa, wiped out 33-60 percent of Europe's population - roughly 25 to 45 million men, women and children. This massive depopulation has had a profound impact on the course of European history, accelerating or initiating important social, economic, religious and cultural changes.
